Diego Maradona said he was shocked to learn that the Cuban leader Fidel Castro died. Maradona, who was watching the Davis Cup final between Argentina and Croatia in Zagreb, told the reporters, "I'm terribly sad as he was like a second father." He mourned the death as the “loss of a great man”. Maradona and Castro had a long history of friendship dating back to 1986, when the Argentine soccer legend first visited Cuba after winning the World Cup. Maradona underwent rehabilitation treatment for drug abuse in Cuba and met Castro on several occasions.
Castro referred to Maradona as a “great friend”.
